Mount Albert Lions Soccer Club was founded by Alan Sutton, Jamie Forret and Roger Edmunds, in 1994. The Club was named from a combination of the Lions home stadium and also founding member Alan Sutton is a supporter of Millwall F.C. known as the “Lions” (English League Championship Team) and wanted to retain some ties to his hometown club, in particular with the resemblance to the club logo. The 2004 Season: The 2004 season has been a great season both for Millwall and for Mount Albert Lions, as they both made significant inroads for cup challenges. The Mount Albert Lions have fought hard this year to make it to the semi finals with three first division teams, while Millwall fought to get to the final game of the 2003-2004 FA cup final. The Millwall Paper Talk said "The bigger they are... said the posters, half promising a fall. But in truth, the bigger they are the harder they can sit on you: 3-0,3-0". The Mount Albert Lions on the other hand found bigger rewards in a more convincing semi final game then Millwall in their final slug fest vs Manchester United. Mount Albert Lions took on Goliath (three time cup winners Newmarket Lightning) for two hours and kept them to a penalty shot in overtime. This year both teams are taking home their pride one way or the other. As of 2004 the Lions became the best defensive team in their division and have improved their offensive game to no end. With the season mid way the Lions had the least goals against in their division and are in where in a tight run for third place, their goals for against average hasn't been matched by the Lions since 1997. In comparison this record almost equals their 1996 season when their goals against equaled this year and loses were only 2. The team is playing tighter then they have for years. This has been the year for all LIONS and Coach Bill McKinlay. League History: In 1995 the league became a recreational one which was run by The Lions, in 2000 The Lions handed over the reigns to the NDSL (Newmarket & District Soccer League). It now consists of 18 teams spread over 2 divisions in the over 35 men’s league.

Carline Cup/Gerry McGarry Memorial Trophy In 1996 The Carline Cup was founded. It was re-named 'The Gerry McGarry Memorial Trophy' after the untimely death of Lions striker 'Gerry (the boot) McGarry. Gerry passed away while on his way home in October 1997 following a league game against Aurora Gunners. For a time the Trophy was passed on to the NDSL where it is presented to the League Champions of the over 35's Division One. In the 2003 Season however it was finally returned to it's home with the Mount Albert Lions Club team where it is now awarded to the Coaches player of the year. In reality it's only fitting that the memory of such an all round team player as Gerry should stay within the club with whom he finished his unfortunate early end of the game. Mount Albert Lions had the goal scoring talents of Gerry for three seasons. Gerry had also played for many years in the NDSL before making the Lions his Final Team, the number 8 shirt has now been retired as a mark of respect for this one of a kind player.
